Skip waste being recycled at a transfer station

Responsible disposal of skip waste

Skip waste collected through this service is taken to licensed waste transfer stations and sorted by material type. On average, around 90% of typical skip waste is recycled or recovered through these processes; the small remaining fraction goes to authorised disposal under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. How skip waste is processed

01

Sorting at a licensed transfer station

Skips collected in the UK are taken to a licensed waste transfer station, most often within the area. At the station, the load is tipped and sorted by material type: wood, metal, hardcore, plasterboard, clean plastics and mixed residue.

02

Compliance with waste regulations

All skip hire bookings in the UK are covered by a valid waste carrier licence, registered with the Environment Agency. A waste transfer note is issued automatically for every booking, covering your duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

03

Recycling and landfill

Recoverable materials are routed to UK specialist recyclers: metal to smelters, wood to biomass, hardcore to aggregate re-use. Only non-recoverable residue reaches landfill. Around 90% of UK skip waste is recycled or recovered (WRAP UK, 2023).
