How to choose the right skip size
Three things decide the size: the type of waste, how much of it there is, and where the skip will sit. Get those clear and the size follows.
For general or light waste, volume governs. A single room usually fits a 4-yard midi; a full kitchen rip-out or a job spanning more than one room steps up to a 6 or 8-yard; a whole-house clearance of bulky, low-weight waste reaches a 10 or 12-yard. When you are between two sizes, size up: the gap between adjacent sizes is usually £30 to £50, far less than the £100-plus a second skip costs if you run out.
For heavy waste (soil, rubble, brick, concrete), weight governs, not volume. A standard lorry maxes out near 10 tonnes including the skip, so a 6-yard filled with rubble is already at its lift limit. Keep heavy waste to a 6-yard maximum, or a 4-yard filled to two-thirds for soil only. Plasterboard cannot be mixed with other waste and needs a dedicated skip.
Finally, placement. A skip on your own driveway needs no permit; a skip on a public road, pavement or verge needs a council permit, typically £25 to £200 on top. If you have driveway access, use it. The full reasoning is in the size-selection guide.
Skip size guide: which size for which job
The recommended size for every job type and scale, then the capacity and weight rating for each of the six standard UK sizes. Pricing is shown for your area once you enter a postcode or town in the calculator above.
Recommended size by job and scale
| Job | Small | Modest | Average | Large | Very large |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home or garage clearance | 2-yard | 4-yard | 6-yard | 8-yard | 10-yard |
| Bathroom refit | 2-yard | 4-yard | 4-yard | 6-yard | 8-yard |
| Kitchen refit | 4-yard | 4-yard | 6-yard | 6-yard | 8-yard |
| Garden clearance | 2-yard | 4-yard | 6-yard | 10-yard | 10-yard |
| General renovation | 4-yard | 6-yard | 8-yard | 10-yard | 12-yard |
| Construction or trade | 6-yard | 8-yard | 8-yard | 10-yard | 12-yard |
| Heavy waste (soil, rubble, concrete) | 2-yard | 4-yard | 6-yard | 6-yard | 6-yard |
Heavy waste is capped by weight, not volume: a 6-yard is the largest size a standard lorry can lift full of rubble, and a 4-yard filled to two-thirds is the maximum for soil only. Larger sizes are never recommended for soil or rubble.
