Hiring the same skip costs almost three times more in some parts of the UK than others. Our June 2026 price research, covering more than 1,400 towns across 116 postcode areas, found the median price of a standard 8-yard builders skip ranges from £183 in the Swansea postcode area to £517 around Truro in Cornwall, against a national average of £331.

Not one of the ten is a major city. Cornwall, the Scottish Borders, the Highlands and islands, Mid Wales, the south-west coast: these are the places where a skip lorry drives furthest to reach a licensed tip, and where two or three operators cover territory that would support twenty in a conurbation.

The cheapest list is the mirror image: industrial towns and cities with dense operator competition and a licensed transfer station within a short drive. South Wales stands out, with the two cheapest areas in Britain, and the urban North East and Midlands fill most of the rest of the table.
London is not the most expensive, and that surprises people
The assumption is that everything costs more in London. For skip hire it does not hold. London's £335 average sits £56 below Scotland and £40 below the South West, and barely above the national average of £331.
The reason is structural. What you pay for a skip is mostly three costs bundled together: the gate fee at the transfer station where the load is tipped, the lorry time to get there and back, and the operator's margin, which competition compresses. London has high gate fees and slow traffic, but it also has dozens of transfer stations within a few miles of any postcode and more operators competing for every job than anywhere else in Britain. Falmouth or Fort William have the opposite: modest gate fees, but an hour or more of lorry time per round trip and a handful of operators with no pressure on price. The Wales paradox
Wales manages to be both ends of the story at once. It is the cheapest region in Britain at £253, home to the two cheapest postcode areas (Swansea £183, Cardiff £220), and yet the LD area around Llandrindod Wells, up on the Welsh borders, is the fifth most expensive in the country at £449. Drive ninety minutes within one nation and the price of the same skip rises by £266. Nowhere else in the index shows a sharper internal split, and it is the postcode lottery in miniature: South Wales has competition and processing capacity, Mid Wales has neither.
What this means if you're hiring a skip
- Never accept a "national" price. The spread within this index is wider than the price difference between skip sizes. A quote that looks fair by national standards can be £100 over the going rate for your postcode. - Size against your actual waste, not habit. In an expensive area, ordering one size too big costs real money. The skip size calculator takes 60 seconds.
- Keep it off the road if you can. A driveway placement avoids the council permit fee (roughly £25 to £280 depending on the authority) on top of the area premium.
- In the dearest areas, ask about wait-and-load. Where hire prices are inflated by haulage distance, paying for the lorry to wait while you load can undercut a standard hire.
Methodology
The index is built from Rent A Skip's June 2026 price research: skip hire quotes anchored to named local operators in each area, collected across more than 1,400 UK towns and aggregated to 116 postcode areas. For each area we record low, median and high prices per skip size; this index uses the median throughout, so a single outlier quote cannot skew an area's figure.
The 8-yard builders skip is the index unit because it is the most commonly hired trade size with near-complete coverage (116 of 118 researched postcode areas). For reference, the 6-yard builders skip shows the same pattern: £286 national average, cheapest in Liverpool at £190, dearest in the TR area at £446.
Regional averages are unweighted means of the postcode-area medians within each region. Prices are for a standard hire of mixed light waste with driveway placement, excluding permits and surcharges.
